Deluth Tyconderoga Sampsonite was born on July 15, 27 to parents Comer and Miyaka Sampsonite. Tyke is the middle of three siblings - brother Maier who is two years younger and sister Lyukai who is three years older. All three were born while in Ghantra. Comer and Miyaka both came from unextraordinary families, of middle class birth. The lone excentricity comes from Miyaka's belief that she is Oriental (hence the name of the sister). Upon marriage, Comer and Miyaka opened an almost-close approxamation of a Chinese restaurant in town, The Slanted Saucer, in a store given as part of the dowry. The restaurant showed the ability to make a modest, but consistent, profit and they decided to have kids. Lyukai was a smart girl. She carried on her parents passion for cooking (but fortunately not her Mom's delusional belief that she too was Oriental). Thus, she stayed to help in the restaurant for most of her life, never settling on a husband.
As a child, Tyke saw his sister have academic success, but was disappointed that she did not choose to exercise her training in a more productive way. Tyke, too, resolved to have academic success but vowed to do more with it. He developed a taste for magic, from his future mentor, and frequent patron of the family restaurant - Distefano Uzbekistan. When Tyke became officially apprenticed, he moved with Distefano to the town of Ipmore to continue his studies. Ipmore was a significantly smaller town than Ghantra, one of those places where everybody know everybody else. As such, he became acquainted with Prentice Koresh. Their relationship remained as slightly more than acquaintences until Distefano died in April of 49. Afterwards, they became closer friends.
In the meantime, Tyke's older brother had decided to stay with the family and work at the restaurant also. With it established that the kids were settled into some semblance of their own lives, Comer and Miyaka decided to move the business from Ghantra in August of 49. They settled on the village of Secara, along a main road to the west of the city of Ghantra. The following year, a friend of Prentice's family, Jean-Luc Stormslayer, asked Prentice to join him when he decided to hit the road. Prentice then asked Tyke if he wanted to join them. Tyke agreed realizing that there was little more training he could do on his own in Ipmore.
