Whatever Happened to 3rd Group? Campaigns >  Third Group

Third_Group Fate

3rd Group, a somewhat experimental Galon campaign distinguished by its high percentage of spellcasters and great diversity of odd religions represented by its characters, faded quietly into the sunset sometime between 1997 and 1998. The question has been asked since then: What happened to the characters in the campaign, which was set five years before 1st Group ever left Silvercloud? Presumably they didn't simply vanish after the last adventure in the campaign, and all were yet young and not far along in their adventuring careers. This page endeavors to answer that question and trace the fates of these unique characters.
Where did the group go, anyway?

Following their final adventure together, a foray into a sea cave inhabited by rogue dwarves and a sahuagin priestess, 3rd Group retired to an inn in Mirago to rest. At that point, Solarius Lonlowynn and Ambrosia Starfighter had long since left the party, and Dr. Rene Aberjonis was dead. During the time 3rd Group was resting, Thorton Krane was approached by the mysterious entity which offered to teach him how to better control his astral body, and left with that being. Also, Caelie, who had long harbored suspicions about Greynore, noticed the scratches in his shield which revealed a design that had been covered. Scraping away the shellac, she found his true coat of arms, long since attained and marking him a member of a Markiran family. Terrified at the revelation of his secret, Greynore fled into the night. The events concerning Greynore's history and departure are detailed in a series of short stories (see below).

As for the rest of 3rd Group…these departures left the gnomish illusionist/thief “Gylph,” the young Teirtunian cleric Caelie, and the dwarven priest of Nerot, Mace Hammerhand, as all that remained of the adventuring band. Mace wandered off on his own shortly thereafter, but no one has yet detailed the fate of Caelie or Gylph.
The current status (or final fate) of the characters

Greynore Dragonbrande

Greynore, the sinister warrior who styled himself the “Paladin of Night” and the avenging arm of Ceridwah, fled the party after Caelie discovered his original coat of arms hidden under the shellac on his shied, and went on to a number of interesting adventures throughout the Cunnott Peninsula. A few of these are chronicled in a series of three short stories by LAZ, found under the 3rd Group section of the Fiction Page. All of these stories are set in the year of 3rd Group's apparent disintegration (679 PD); Greynore's current whereabouts are unknown, and he might not even be alive by now.

Solarius Lonlowynn

Solarius, the elven air elementalist, has had the most colorful career of any of 3rd Group's former characters. Leaving the group slightly before its breakup, he entered the underworld of the Cunnott Peninsula in the service of Desiree Dreambender, an elven mage of great power who commands an extensive criminal empire in southeastern Gregora. He has since grown in power as both a mage and a rogue, traveling throughout Gregora in Desiree's service. Solarius has appeared in a few campaigns and crossovers since then, recently aiding 4th Group in stopping an elven plot to assassinate the Bishop of Northgray. Since then, Desiree has sent him on an as-yet unrevealed mission.

Dr. Rene Aberjonis

Steve's cleric/mage of Selene, the only member of 3rd Group to die in action, was killed on the Moors of Endymion by his comrade Gylph when the latter was possessed by their ally Thorton, who was at the time controlled by the nameless Lord of the Ekimmu, Master of Lost Souls (for a full explanation of this convoluted death, ask anyone involved). Due to the circumstances of his death, Rene became an undead apparition, anchored to the woods near the site of his death. Like most good-aligned individuals who become undead, Rene eventually went insane from the craving for life forces and descended into evil. Forsaken by his goddess and hungry for the living, the apparition that was once Rene went on a rampage in Mandra, the only village within reach of his anchor. He killed eighteen cows, seven chickens, and three hapless villagers before clerics from a nearby town were able to hunt down and exorcise him. The apparitions of the villagers he killed are still said to haunt the woods outside Mandra, but none have yet attacked the town or been reliably sighted.

Caelie

Thorton Krane

Shortly after the party's final adventure, Thorton was approached by an astral entity able to detect his spirit form. The entity offered to teach Thorton the uses of his astral body's powers, and ultimately aid him in the goal of acquiring a permanent material body. Thorton accepted this offer and departed with the entity. He has not been seen or heard from since, and his fate is unknown, as are the nature and motives of his benefactor.

Gylph

Ambrosia Starfighter

There is some question as to whether this character ever existed; Steve says he never played her, but I remember her participating briefly in one session. My recollection was that she was about to follow 3rd Group on a boat to their adventure on the Isle of Skeletons, but she fell off the boat when Steve had to leave early, and that was the last anyone saw of her. I'm assuming she swam to shore and returned to her homeland in the distant Amazon Islands. As an aside, a draft copy of her character sheet recently discovered in the 3rd Group archives indicates that at some point the character's name was changed to “Joyelle Starfighter”; as the addition was written in pencil on a printed character sheet, the most likely possibility is that the character saw play at least once, or the modification would not have been made and the sheet would have never made its way from Steve's hands to the group archives.

Mace Hammerhand

Mace continued on the mission which 4th group had helped him on. He set out on his own, slowly changing the minds of the younger races concerning his deity Nerot. Some may have heard of him, few probably have met him, but those that have will not forget him. [[Update by Chuck]]
